Keeping Indoor Office Air Healthy

If you work in an office, you've probably heard a lot about the importance of not sitting at a desk all day. It's good to stretch and give your legs and hands a break, and get your eyes off of a computer. Despite doing that, though, you or a colleague may still be experiencing headaches, unexplainable tiredness, or skin or breathing issues. This may be the result of poor indoor air quality.

Although not opening windows may be detrimental, if the air outside is sketchy, outside pollutants or allergens may also be harmful. Depending on where the windows are located, outside cigarette smoke and exhaust fumes can find their way in. Humidifiers will add moisture, and dehumidifiers will remove moisture, to improve breathing.

Heating vents and air conditioners that are not free of dirt and dust, or that cannot fully circulate because of where they are placed, are more or less rendered ineffective. It is essential that they are constantly kept clean and clear. Build-ups of dirt and dust in any area of a working space, including on plants, can also negatively affect air quality.

Open paint cans and other products used for cleaning and repairs can continue to emit fumes. So can old food and beverages left in open containers in the fridge, on counters, or still in the garbage cans.

Mold can develop from excessive moisture, so it's important to keep work spaces and restrooms free of stagnant water and wet conditions.
